Garbage Soup

Nanna Patsy’s Garbage Soup
2 tbsp. olive oil
1 medium onion chopped
2 cloves garlic minced
1 can (16oz) Cannellini beans
                              drained & rinsed
1 can diced tomatoes + juice
3 cups chicken broth
½ cup dry pasta (macaroni)
Kosher salt (pinch)
½ cup chopped parsley
Parmesan cheese

Cook onions and garlic until soft. Add beans, broth,
tomatoes and salt, bring to a boil. Reduce heat,
cover, simmer for 15 minutes. Add pasta and cook
until pasta is done, apx. 10 minutes. Add parsley
(at your own risk) top with Parmesan cheese. Enjoy.
Raise a toast to mom.

Note: This is not the real or original Garbage Soup recipe.
It is however a recipe that I got from Mom on my last visit
to see her in Geneva. It is very easy to prepare and very good.
I use what ever dry pasta I have on hand… with exception of
Lasagna.

Dad, Russia and the FBI

This is why I started this blog, because the details on some of these adventures are already getting fuzzy.

I went to visit dad in his old office at Metro one day and he was at his desk talking on the phone. As I sat there waiting I noticed that dad was reading information from the front page of the New York Times to whomever he was speaking to on the phone. This of course piqued my interest and I started paying closer attention. Dad was relaying information about some incident that had just happened in Russia; it was probably still the Soviet Union in those days. As was dad's way he was pontificating about what had happened, what was happening, and what would happen all the while quoting the article, without mentioning where his information was coming from to the person on the phone. This whole phone call lasted about 20 minutes and when dad hung up the phone he was very happy to have helped the FBI in their research about the incident in Russia. Guess they don't get the NYT in Washington.

Spanking Machine

The often heard about but never seen Spanking Machine. The number of times we were "threatened" with the spanking machine is beyond measure. I tried to keep the fear of the spanking machine going with my own children but because I didn't spank anyone the machine failed to impress. They just told me that "you don't spank." I always told them "Yes. But if I did you'd be getting a good one."

Barber College

Barber College,

When we were growing up haircuts consisted of driving over to the west side by Metro to get our haircut. Dad used to joke that we were going to the "Barber College" to get our haircut. We all had a good laugh at the time. Now, looking back at pictures from that time I'm not so sure who the joke was on......

Where to Start?

There are so many things about my family growing up that at the time didn't seem all that unusual. I knew even at the time that they were funny, but I thought that that was how things were in all families. So this is an opportunity for my siblings to join me in compiling a list of mom and dad's greatest moments.....

a random list just to start:

barber college
spanking machine
cedar point
